What is the Accelerated Reader Program?

The Accelerated Reader Program allows students to challenge and push themselves to the next level of reading. How is this done? At the beginning of the year, each student in both Sixth and Seventh Grade Takes "The S.T.A.R. Test." The S.T.A.R Test Results tell the students and teachers what reading level is best for them.

After the students get their reading level (Somewhere between 1.0 and 13.0) they will check out books within their reading level from our Helen Tyson Library of AR Books. Students are encouraged to check out AR Books that are at their designated reading level.
After reading their books, students will take a test on that book. The AR Computer Software asks students from 5 to 20 questions about the book's characters, story, and details. If they pass the test, they are given points for completion of the book and the score on the test.
Various incentives are offered for students who read AR books and take the tests.
HTMS has over 4000 tests that can be taken on the books in the library.  Each team recognizes the highest reader in their team for that nine weeks.
